Reflection:
The artifacts for Standard 4.2 are the Internet Safety Blog Posting from ITEC 7430 and the Copyright Assignment from ITEC 7445. These artifacts were created to help teachers discern the importance of student safety on the internet and how to apply appropriate copyright and fair use practices in school. I researched and compiled information and resources for internet safety and I created an interactive presentation for teachers on copyright tenets.
Standard 4.2, Safe, Healthy, Legal and Ethical Use, established the expectations that the artifact addresses my ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information. In the Internet Safety Blog Posting, I model and facilitate the conversations that teachers should have with their students regarding safe and healthy uses of digital information and technologies. I also list several resources that teachers can use to support the dialogue with students, such as ISTE’s poster on Citizenship in the Digital Age and BrainPop’s Digital Citizenship lesson. In the Copyright presentation, I explain what copyright is and its impact on teachers. I then model and facilitate legal and ethical uses of digital information technologies by providing interactive scenarios for teachers to determine if they understand the relevant information on copyright in the classroom.
During this completion of the Internet Safety Blog and the development of the Copyright Assignment presentation I learned strategies to share with students on safety and copyright. I knew that teachers could use videos in the classroom with students, and as a history teacher I have used them. I did not know that videos are not to be used as a reward with students. To improve the quality of the Copyright Assignment, I would include more positive wording in my feedback for incorrect answers in the interactive component of the presentation.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted faculty development. Faculty development was impacted because teachers learned safe, healthy, legal and ethical uses of digital information and technologies by reviewing the blog and presentation. The impact on faculty development can be measured by a decrease in student inappropriate use of the internet and a decrease in teacher’s violating copyright rules.
