The Emerging Technology Project assigned in the ITEC 7445 course and a Padlet I used with students will serve as the artifact for Standard 3.2. The purpose of the Emerging Technology Project was to evaluate an emerging technology that could be used in school that would complement our current resources and serve as a tool to help with student learning. For this assignment, I researched and compared various emerging technologies and selected Padlet. I created a presentation in Padlet to detail its uses and I created the Padlet for student use.
Standard 3.6: Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools and Resources, established the expectations that the artifact explains my ability to collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources. It also established that the artifact meets the criteria for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology and infrastructure. After researching and evaluating various emerging technologies to use at our school, I collaborated with a teacher and administrator on selecting Padlet to use with our students. Padlet was selected because students can post a variety of selections from images, to videos, text and more. Students can use Padlet to collaborate with peers and teachers can use Padlet to provide feedback to students. Padlet meet the criteria of our school for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility, because it can be linked from various parts of our LMS and our school Google Message Board. It also allows students to post without logging in, without identifying themselves publicly, it is moderated by teachers and it is free to use.
While completing the Emerging Technology Project, I learned that there are numerous emerging technologies that are not compatible with our LMS and school policies. I learned that students enjoy posting images to Padlet, because it is similar to posting on unfiltered social media. I also learned how difficult it can be to keep up with moderating the Padlet. In order to improve the quality of the artifact or process, I would have included additional instructions to students indicating that their posts would not be uploaded if they did not have accompanying text related to the standards addressed on field trip.
The work that went into creating the artifact impacted faculty development and student learning. Faculty development was impacted because I along with colleagues learned about various emerging technologies including Padlet. Students learned how to use Padlet to convey information relevant to the standards-based field trip. The impact on student learning was assessed with via their appropriate posting to the Padlet and on correlating standards-based assessments.
